Description

Experience the magic of Sourdough Croissant Bread, where artisanal sourdough meets the flaky, buttery layers of a croissant, creating a delightful harmony of textures.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Combine the active sourdough starter, flour, milk, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle and spread the softened butter over two-thirds of the surface.
  4. Fold the unbuttered third over the middle buttered section, then fold the remaining buttered third over it.
  5. Roll the dough into a rectangle again and repeat the folding process two more times.
  6. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Shape the dough into a loaf and transfer it to a greased loaf pan.
  9. Cover the dough and allow it to rise until it doubles in size, about 1-2 hours.
  10. Brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Cool slightly on a rack before slicing. Serve warm with butter and jam.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients to ensure better blending. Keep butter cool during the folding process to maintain flaky layers. You can customize with herbs, cheese, or chocolate chips.
