Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine molasses, sugar, butter, and salt over medium heat. Stir occasionally to blend the ingredients.
  2. Watch closely as the mixture heats, stirring until it reaches 250°F (the hard ball stage) on your candy thermometer.
  3. Once you’ve reached the right temperature, remove the saucepan from heat and swiftly stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Carefully pour the hot mixture onto a greased marble slab or a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool slightly for about 5-10 minutes, until it is warm but still manageable to touch.
  6. With buttered hands, begin pulling and folding the warm taffy.
  7. Shape the taffy into a log, ensuring an even thickness throughout.
  8. Wrap individual pieces in wax paper or cut them into bite-sized squares, storing them in an airtight container.

Notes

Make the taffy ahead of special occasions and store in an airtight container. You can also experiment with flavors like peppermint or cinnamon.
