Description

Delicious homemade jelly donuts that are soft, fluffy, and filled with fruity jam.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup fruit jam (e.g., raspberry or strawberry)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast and warm milk. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it’s frothy and bubbly.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt until blended.
  3. Combine wet and dry: Pour the yeast mixture, eggs, and melted butter into the flour mixture. Stir until the dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Shape the donuts: Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters or round molds to cut out circles.
  7. Fill the donuts: Place a spoonful of jam in the center of half of the circles. Top each with the remaining circles and carefully seal the edges.
  8. Heat the oil: In a deep frying pan or Dutch oven, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), using a candy thermometer to ensure accuracy.
  9. Fry the donuts: Gently fry the donuts for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Don’t overcrowd the pan!
  10. Drain and dust: Remove the donuts from the oil with a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels. Finally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Make-ahead tips: You can prepare the dough in advance and let it rise overnight in the refrigerator. Just remember to bring it to room temperature before shaping and frying.
