Transform a simple onion into a crispy, flavorful blooming onion with the air fryer. Perfect for gatherings and appetizer lovers.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil in a spray bottle
Instructions
- Soak the onion: Start by placing your large sweet onion in a bowl of cold water. Let it soak for about 30 minutes.
- Prepare the onion: Carefully slice your onion vertically into ‘petals,’ going roughly 1/2 inch deep, keeping the root intact.
- Create the spice mix: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, ground cumin, dried thyme, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
- Prepare the egg mixture: In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and water until smooth.
- Coat the onion: Dip your onion into the egg mixture, and dust it generously with the flour mixture.
- Preheat your air fryer: Set the temperature to 370°F (187°C).
- Cook the onion: Place your coated onion in the air fryer basket, spray it lightly with oil, and cook for 20-25 minutes.
- Let it cool: Once golden brown, remove it from the air fryer and let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Serve with spicy dipping sauces for added flavor.
