Description
A delightful bread wreath filled with caramelized onions and Gruyère cheese, perfect for gatherings or cozy meals.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of bread (preferably a baguette or round bread)
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking.
- Caramelize the onions: In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook them gently, stirring frequently until they turn golden brown and caramelized, about 20–25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.
- Prepare the bread: Slice off the top of your loaf to create a ‘wreath’ shape and carefully hollow out the bread’s interior, leaving a sturdy shell.
- Fill with goodness: Place the caramelized onions and shredded Gruyère cheese inside the hollowed bread, allowing the cheese to mingle with the sweet onions.
- Egg wash: Place the stuffed bread on a baking sheet, then beat the egg and brush it generously over the top of the wreath to achieve that stunning golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, approximately 15-20 minutes.
- Cool slightly: Once baked to perfection, remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. If desired, garnish with fresh herbs for a pop of color and added flavor.
- Serve warm: Slice and serve this delightful wreath as a quick lunch, dinner, or appetizer.
Notes
Make-ahead convenience: You can caramelize the onions a day in advance and store them in an airtight container in the fridge. This significantly cuts down on prep time when you’re ready to bake.
