Description

A gourmet grilled cheese sandwich featuring ripe pears and crisp apples, complemented by caramelized onions and sharp cheddar cheese, all nestled between crunchy sourdough bread.


Ingredients

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a non-stick skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook on medium-low heat for about 10 minutes until golden brown. Add balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the sandwiches: Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the same skillet. Assemble the sandwiches by layering half of the cheddar cheese on two slices of sourdough, followed by caramelized onions, apple slices, pear slices, the remaining cheese, and the other slices of bread.
  3. Grill the sandwiches: Place one sandwich in the skillet and grill for 4-5 minutes until golden brown. Flip the sandwich and grill the other side for another 4-5 minutes until cheese melts.
  4. Repeat & serve: Remove both sandwiches from the skillet, allow to cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.

Notes

Caramelize onions ahead of time. You can also use an air fryer or oven for a different cooking method.
